How Will We Meet the Energy Demands of the Coming Megacities?

How Will We Meet the Energy Demands of the Coming Megacities?Odds are you live in a city. In fact, more than half the world today lives in cities and by 2050, it’s expected that two-thirds of the world will be residing in cities. While smaller cities struggle to modernize to support the influx of people, who are […]

Leadership Solution Map for Chaos and Conflict

Leadership Solution Map for Chaos and Conflict

Our unconscious habit of giving away our energy and the subsequent need to steal energy from others underlies all chaos and conflict. Using crisis as a motivator for individual and organizational change carries too high a cost. Chaos is not necessary for change. Living mindfully on purpose is the healthiest choice that produces the best business and personal results.  […]

The coming era of unlimited — and free — clean energy

The coming era of unlimited — and free — clean energy

In the 1980s, leading consultants were skeptical about cellular phones.  McKinsey & Company noted that the handsets were heavy, batteries didn’t last long, coverage was patchy, and the cost per minute was exorbitant.  It predicted that in 20 years the total […]

Graphene Armor Would Be Light, Flexible and Far Stronger Than Steel

Graphene Armor Would Be Light, Flexible and Far Stronger Than Steel

Who needs science fiction? Nature is a wealth of imaginative plot twists. Take carbon. Carbon is common. It’s the fourth most abundant element in the universe. And yet, carbon is also exceptional. It’s the elemental keystone of terrestrial life. It stores and releases enough energy to power industrial revolutions. […]

Why $100 Billion Invested In Wind Or Solar Will Produce More Energy Than Oil

Why $100 Billion Invested In Wind Or Solar Will Produce More Energy Than Oil

French investment bank Kepler Chevreux has produced a fascinating analysis that has dramatic implications for the global oil industry. It estimates that $100 billion invested in either wind energy or solar energy – and deployed as energy for light and commercial vehicles – will produce […]

Sun, wind and drain

Sun, wind and drain

SUBSIDIES for renewable energy are one of the most contested areas of public policy. Billions are spent nursing the infant solar- and wind-power industries in the hope that they will one day undercut fossil fuels and drastically reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being put into the atmosphere. The idea seems to be working. Photovoltaic panels have halved in price since 2008 and the capital cost of a solar-power plant—of which panels account for slightly under half—fell by 22% in 2010-13. In a few sunny places, solar power is providing electricity to the grid as cheaply as conventional coal- or gas-fired power plants.  […]

Hydrogen: The car fuel of the future?

Hydrogen: The car fuel of the future?

A small British firm is looking forward to a day in which we will take our cars to the garage and fill them with hydrogen.  Acal Energy, based in Runcorn in Cheshire, says it has developed a chemistry that could make hydrogen fuel cells much cheaper and longer-lasting than current technologies.  It wants to license its chemistry to the world’s car-makers, opening the way for hydrogen vehicles to sell in large volumes in 10 or 20 years’ time.  “We believe this is one of the breakthrough technologies,” says Brendan Bilton, the company’s chief commercial officer.  “We’re pretty confident and excited… that this will start unlocking the barriers,” he continues, “Allowing fuel cells to be in products for mass market applications.”  It is a bold dream but not a crazy one.   […]

‘Electronic blood’ computer tested

'Electronic blood' computer tested

IBM has unveiled a prototype of a new brain-inspired computer powered by what it calls “electronic blood”.  The firm says it is learning from nature by building computers fuelled and cooled by a liquid, like our minds.  The human brain packs phenomenal computing power into a tiny space and uses only 20 watts of energy – an efficiency IBM is keen to match.  Its new “redox flow” system pumps an electrolyte “blood” through a computer, carrying power in and taking heat out.  […]

4 Ways That Quantum Technology Could Transform Health Care

download (60)In July, the International Conference on Quantum Technologies brought together the leading minds in physics to discuss the latest advances in quantum technology. Throughout the course of the conference, presenters demonstrated cutting-edge research with implications for everything from data security to IT to energy. There’s one industry, however, that is especially poised for massive changes on many levels from quantum technology: health care. Quantum technology is set to revolutionize the way we think about health care, medical data, and even our own biology.   […]
